Problem:
In food processing plants, the pumps used to move meat paste throughout the system have extremely close tolerances. Any piece of tramp metal could result in massive damage to the pump and shut down the entire line.
Solution:
When
H.J. Heinz' pet food plant in Bloomsburg, PA, USA, changed from using frozen to "pumpable" meat paste, they found it necessary to implement a new process for the removal of metal contamination. After investigating alternatives, they installed a
Rare Earth Magnetic Trap directly before the pump. According to Dennis Murnane, quality assurance manager, concerned with the possibility of the magnet losing strength when exposed to elevated temperatures, they purchased a Magnetic Trap rated up to 250oF (121oC).
